Public opinion- the collective attitude of citizens on a given issue or question. In a democracy, there must be some link between what the public thinks and what the government does. The nature of that link can vary greatly. How tightly should we be linked to government? (delegate v. trustee system) Relies heavily on cues and shortcuts rather than informed issue positions (name recognition, political party position, interest group endorsements) Elected officials- public opinion may influence government decision making. Academics- seek to understand why people behave the way they do. The people- may be motivated to become active in politics. Political socialization-a complex process through which individuals become aware of politics, learn political facts, and form political values. Generational effect- a specific age group is effected by historical events ex: vietnam, great depression, baby boomers. Life cycle effects- political views influenced by maturing ex:winston churchill.
