POLI 1001 Chapter : March 5 Lecture
Document Summary
March 5, 2010: move from general to particular. Generosity: too much generosity and you will have nothing; not enough and you are stingy. Seek for the context to which you define yourself; right time, to the right person. Courage: excess of courage leads to recklessness; not enough courage leads to cowardice. Best way to do this is to search for the mean. Not necessarily the average, more so the "middle of a circle" As we are searching, avoid in particular what is most pleasurable to us (self-interest) Example of what aristotle means when he is discussing "the mean" The function of the philosopher to teach intellectual virtues. Aristotle is taking us, politically speaking, to a discussion of justice, knowledge of justice, and concern of justice. Social settings in which we find ourselves call for this. Virtue is also proper conduct and attitude of individuals to one"s self.
