Take home essay- oceanography: first, the theory of plate tectonics helps explain ocean basins. As the lithosphere begins to crack, a rift forms and the two new continents are separated by an ocean basin. Second, plate tectonics explains recycling oceanic crust as crust is created at mid ocean ridges, spreads away from the ridges, then is recycled into the mantle at subduction zones. Third, plate tectonics explain the formation of terranes because these are oceanic plateaus that form by uplifting and mountain building as they strike a continent on a convergent plate boundary. Fourth, plate tectonics explain formation of hot spots because these are associated with divergent plate boundaries as volcanoes form when plates move away from each other. Fifth, ocean earthquakes are explained by plate tectonics as plates converge thus running into each other and causing the quake.
