4. 2. 2012: the three major domains of life are bacteria, archaea, and eukarya. The five kingdoms of organisms are monera, plantae, animalia, fungi, and protoctista. The fundamental criteria used when assigning organisms to divisions are where they live and how they move: plankton drift with the ocean currents; some can swim, but usually only move weakly or vertically. Nekton are able to move independently of the currents by swimming or other means of propulsion. Benthos are organisms that live on or in the ocean bottom. Plankton make up a much larger portion of the ocean s biomass because many organisms spend their juvenile and/or larval stages as plankton: about 2% of marine species inhabit the pelagic environment, and 98% inhabit the benthic environment.
