The early history of oceanography/marine science is closely related to the history of ocean exploration and voyaging. Ploynesians are the first people that experienced the ocean. First demonstration of ability and knowledge to navigate transoceanic voyages. Polynesians are one fo the dour cultures that inhabited. When the sun is directly over your head, you wont have a shadow. This means that the sun is just over your head. The viking ship only has one mast, however the large ship can land in shallow water. Water tight compartment- like on titanic, the compartments in the bottom. The purpose for chinese to do ocean oxploration, for polynesians (they wanted to find new land or food), Chinese, they wanted to show that they were civilized and their ship was laden with gifts. Submarine to explore oceans- replacing the alvin- the most successful but now it hard to maintain. Alvin dived in the shallow waters- massive pressure hole that protects the crew.
