Document Summary

Chapter 9 homework: the sun may be larger than the moon, but its tides are not greater because of the sun"s distance from earth and the moon. The moon creates two solar bulges on the ocean"s surface. One of the solar bulges is extended towards the moon and the other extended in the opposite direction. During the 24 hours it takes earth to make a full rotation, the moon has continued moving to the east in its orbit around earth. This causes earth to rotate an extra 50 minutes to catch up with the moon"s orbit: spring tide occurs during new and full moon phases because the tide is extremely large and springs forth. The spring tide is also known as the maximum tidal range. Neap tides occur at first-quarter and third-quarter moons because the tide-generating force of the sun is working at right angles to the tide-generating force of the moon.
