Alfred wegner used the shapes of matching shorelines on different continents as a supporting piece of evidence for continental drift. Scientist doubted him because there were considerable gaps and crustal overlap. Earth"s magnetic field, generated form the earth"s core, creates invisible lines of magnetic force. It is this magnetic force field that protects earth from raditation and electric particles that the sun throws off. Detailed paleomagnetism studies of the sea floor confirmed a similar pattern of alternating stripes of above-average and below-average magnetism. The ocean floor had embedded in it a regular pattern of alternating magnetic stripes unlike anywhere on land. Sea floor spreading is a process of producing the lithosphere when convective upwelling of magma along the oceanic ridges moves the ocean floor away from the ridge axes at rates between 2 to 12 centimeters per year.
