Multiple compelling lines of evidence support the theory of plate tectonics, which states that earth is composed of a patchwork of thin, rigid plates that move with respect to one another. Evidence on different continents- rocks, fossils, glacial patterens, etc. Some parts of the mantle are warmer than others, and convection currents form when warm mantle material rises and cool material falls. Above the mantle floats the cool, rigid, liithospehere, which is fragmented into plates. Plate movement is powered by gravitiy: the plates slide down the ridges at the places of their formation: their dense, cool leading edges are pulled back into the mantle. Convection: transfer of heat energy in a gas or liquid through the movement of currents. Paleomagnatism : the study of earth"s ancient magnetic field: can reverse over time.
