African music characterisitcs: group orientated, has a ritual for everything, music est. a bond with the group, social glue, music in africa plays a role similar to the role that speech plays in our culture-communication. The pitch of a work or syllable contributes to its meaning: african music is mainly vocal, african instrumental music is mainly rhythmic rather than melodic. Terms related to musical form: aaba, form of many standard tunes. Also part of a stringed instrument that hold up the strings: chorus, one pass through the form of the tune. Similar to going around the board in monopoly. See verse: solo break, a spot in the music where the band stops playing in order to let the soloist get a good start, stop time, the soloist is the only timekeeper.
