Baroque orchestra: renaissance instruments disappeared, violin family dominates sound, harpsichord for basso continuo, gradually added, pairs of woodwinds, occasionally trumpets and tympani, sometimes french horns. Something sounded : collection of movements with different moods. Chamber sonata: collection of short movements, generally 4-6 movements, dance-like character, each movements a different dance, popular styles: allemande, sarabande, gavotte, gigue, concert music, hot dance music. Solo sonata: 1 melody instrument and basso continuo. Trio sonata: 2 melody instruments and a bass line, can also add harpsichord to create basso continuo. Arcangelo corelli (1653-1713: spent his career in rome, violinist, his sonatas were intentionally popular, music remarkable for its harmony. Ritornello form: tutti plays ritornello themes, all or part of a main theme returns, concertino alrternates with virtuosic passages, free number of alternations. Late baroque melodic style: principle of continuing development, long, expansive, irregular phrases, sequential development.
