ME 2212 Chapter : Chapter Three
Document Summary
While problem-solving, the human mind requires use of its long term, and short-term memory. This knowledge can be composed of chunks of information that is general, specific to one area, or a procedure. The short term memory can be compared to a small and fast (0. 1 second) processor. Its size is augmented by the external environment. The long-term memory however is slow to remember and usually fast to recall. Creativity takes hard work and is aided by good environments, practice and design procedures. Creative designers are of average intelligence, but can visualize ideas and are typically nonconformists will a lot of knowledge about the problem domain. Due to the complexity of most products, the designing of the product takes place with a team of designers rather than a one man crew. Because of this, it is important to pay attention to each team member s problem-solving style.
