LIS 1001 Chapter : 001 Lesson Information Literacy Ethical Use
Document Summary
This course is based on the concept of information literacy, which was promulgated in 1989 by the association of college and research libraries in response to the exploding availability of information. Not that you care, but that"s what happened. Information literacy is now the basis for bibliographic instruction around the world. Information literacy can be boiled down to four principles: recognize when you need information, find the information you need, evaluate the information you find, use the information you find effectively and ethically. Knowing when you need information is probably the easiest of these, although it is not always that easy to tell when information is missing. Assuming you know what you think you know is a trap into which many people stumble, and if this has ever happened to you, it"s embarrassing to find out after the fact that you were a complete boob. This is what makes being able to find information so important.
