Oasis - high contrast to surroundings inside oasis is green, lush, cool outside is the desert. Idea from the koran: protection from climate control (heat & wind); & privacy. Plants and trees: they created shade, which works with the water to create a cool atmosphere aka oasis. Architecture: rich and colorful; much of the d cor is based upon math/geometric shapes, design were often inspired by plants and vines. Not formal: wonderful ability to place buildings together not formal or rectangular but with the grouping suggested by the landscape of the place. They did this to magnify the beauty of the place. Beautifully fitted to the site: they fit the buildings to the sites; each building is join to the neighboring sites in an informal non geometric way, land and architecture are one-they didn"t separate the beauty. Walled or tops of hills: houses were build like this for protection.
