Language: a conventional, rule-governed communication system (uniquely human: means of communication, composed of symbols, shared among users, linguistics: the scientific study of language, linguists: people who discover and describe the rules of language, language is 50,000-100,000 years old. Communication: transfer of/exchange of information to convey a message: speech: human vocal communication, 6 theories of the source of language. Natural sound source: also called bow-wow / poo poo theory, words developed from imitation sounds in the environment (onomatopoeia) Physical adaptation source: physical features particularly adapted for human speech, teeth, lips, mouth, tongue. Genetic source: humans have an innate capacity for language, proven by showing that babies who grow up deaf can pick it up (asl) Social interaction source: also called yo-he-ho theory, group of people have to coordinate a joint effort during talking, think about 2 guys of different backgrounds (speak diff. languages) working at a construction site.
