Book iii of paradise lost begins with a second invocation in which milton again calls on a heavenly muse to impart in him the bright essence (pl iii. 6) of divine knowledge. Holy light (pl iii. 1) as a motif throughout referencing his physical blindness. Milton suggests that the world is naturally dark and deep (pl iii. 11) and that only the holy light of knowledge can give order to the void and formless infinite (pl iii. 12). Satan"s trip through chaos in the previous passages where he flies through a void of infinite nothingness. Milton likens himself to satan by placing himself in a similar void. His blindness has stripped the physical world from him and he desperately longs for its graces.
