Scientific study of behavior & mental processes: behavior, mental processes (animals too) Goals of psych: description, explanation, prediction, control. Psychologist cant prescribe medications vs. psychiatrist- can prescribe meds. Areas in psych: clinical- deal with people that have mental issues, developmental- examine how we change over life, experimental (cognitive)- study things such as memory, perception, etc. Psychologists typically work in: universities & 4 year colleges, self- employed, private for profit. Structuralism: focused on basic elements of the mind, sensations, feelings, images. Functionalism: william james, how the mind allows people to adapt, live, work, play, believed it was too early to study consciousness as it is, like an ever-changing stream. Other viewpoints: psychoanalysis- sigmund freud (more in europe, behaviorism- john b. watson (focus on observable behavior) Scientific method: develop a question, form a hypothesis, test the hypothesis, come to a conclusion, share the results, replication. Theory: hypothesis: testable prediction of what happen under certain conditions, theory: comprehensive explanations of observable effects.
