Spain and portugal had lots of people in the americas. Large portions of the interior of south america weren"t controlled by the europeans: initial encounters, the conquistadors. Columbus arrives in hispaniola (present day haiti and dominican republic) Conquistadors set out to enslave the population and find gold: conquests of mexico, 1519- 1521. Took 2 years to win over the city. The spanish got the loyalty of some of the people who the aztecs had conquered to fight on their side. Cortes tries to govern the new empire, brings missionaries over to spread christianity: "ecological imperialism" Disease- bacteria and viruses from europe, the americans had no immunity against them. Small pox- spreads across the whole continent, has an incubation period of about 2 weeks- spreads when people try to run away to other areas. Population implosion- diseases kill millions, worse loss of life in world history- epidemic over 100 years after the spanish conquest.
