Alphabet has 26 letters. For the following questions ignore any restrictions on how letters may be combined.
1. How many unique 26 letter words can be made from the alphabet if each letter must occur once and only once in
the word?
2. How about if letters could be repeated?
3. How many unique 5 letter words can be made? (with no repeating letters within a word)

A blowout control system has 3 redundant subsystems A, B, & C. The system is considered successful if either no
blowout occurs OR a blowout occurs and any one of the 3 subsystems works correctly. However, the subsystems only
work properly if all of their components work properly. Subsystem A has 4 components, B has 6, and C has 12.
Assume failure (or success) of each component is independent of result of any other component.
1. What are the total number of unique outcomes for this system? (system state being unique component status plus
whether a blowout has occurred or not)
2. What are the total number of system failure outcomes for this system?
A truck arrives at a factory containing 30 pumps. It contains 2 defective pumps.
1. How many ways are there for drawing 5 samples from the truck for testing?
2. How many ways are there for drawing a sample of 5 containing exactly 1 defect?
3. How many are there for drawing a sample of 5 containing exactly 2 defects?
