HIST 4060 Chapter : Hoover
Document Summary
Hoover"s response to the depression: hoover was elected in 1928, right before the crash, andrew mellon, sec. of treasury, he believed that the best way to deal with the depression was to ignore it. In his mind, the crash was an economic correction and it is need to bring it back to where it should be. He believed that the government shouldn"t do anything. Businesses that survive are the best and should be able to succeed: hoover didn"t believe that. He did believe that the government should do something. He believed the worst (homeless, starving) should be dealt with on a private level by churches and shelters or at the state level. This would work if the problem is small: hoover compared it to the mississippi river flood in 1927. Hoover coordinates relief efforts without government by the red cross and donations. This worked because people not affected on the west and east coast, helped out.
