Hatred of kings (era of the seven kings)- republic has good political system (senate where people have voice) Image of she-wolf with romulus and remus- two boys placed in a raft, exposed to the elements, and a wolf hears the babies crying. Senators- serve for life, two people in charge for a year at a time; organization in military-like. Civil wars: generals, marius, crassus, sulla- took over rome as dictator during crisis.
