Plants are filled with people who speak different languages and lead different lives; isolation and dehumanized. The tin man is the symbol of the industrial worker- he has no heart. At the turn of the century, america produced more than the rest of the countries put together. Americans now had a higher standard of living. No regulation of chemical and waste production. Two schools of thought: industrialization versus small towns. Big business triggers the formation of big labor. National labor unions will begin to endure. Conditions in workplace: long hours (60-72+ hours/week), lack of unsafe equipment and no safety standards in place (accidents frequent an everyday occurrence; death is even possible between 1880 and 1900 30,000 a year killed) Wages: were found to be low by workers.
