This period is starting to become what society is today. American is transitioning from a rural nation to an industrial nation. Americans are moving away from the farm and working in a factory. Telegraph: need to be able to have communication network, the telegraph spread out, telegraph companies made a deal with the railroad companies and where ever the railroad went, a telegraph wire was there. And later the telephone was invented and wherever the railroad was the telephone was. Rise of the meat packing industry: railroad allows them to transport them across the country. The ability to turn iron into steel: 20 times stronger then iron, need steel to build bridge and big buildings. Oil refining: to lubricate big engines, rise of entrepreneurs and managers, entrepreneurs guys that come up with ideas and starting a company that becomes a national power house. Often times a monopoly: john d. rockefeller gets into oil refining early and destroys his competition.
