Industrialists and american workers high: southern, midwestern farmers and free market advocates- low. Industries concentrated in cities, new types of entertainment. Longer commutes more feasible with transportation: much smaller residences-apartments (1or 2 rooms, slums become more common, mostly african americans and immigrants. Immigrants maintained native culture: churches, synagogues served as community centers, chinese, japanese emphasized family, ethnic newspapers, theaters, and schools also maintained culture, need to assimilate not always ignored or discouraged, the japanese association of america. Immigrants also wanted independence: neighborhoods and community organizations gave support, familiarity, believed american dream of hard work = success.
