HIST 2057 Chapter : The New South
Document Summary
Sharecroppers, tenants, renters, and landlords: ways to replace slaves, made it hard for slaves to succeed financially. Tenant farming: worker basically enters arrangement with landowner to work on their farm with set wages: preferred by workers because they always knew how much pay they were going to receive. This trend was detrimental to both the black population and to some southerners who felt as though they needed to become equal with the north. The new south creed: belief that south needs to change: needs to grow more diverse crops and have more industries led by boosters (newspaper owners) It is hard for industries to survive because they only use low-skilled workers (with low wages) and do not produce finished products, which sell for more than raw materials. In these industries, the profits tend to fluctuate. Because workers move so much in these industries, it is hard to establish cities or civilizations.
