Homesteaders: homestead act of 1862, gave 160 acre grants of land in the west, certain qualifications: Never taken up arms against the united states. Homesteader applying had to live on the land for 5 years. Reason was to create land of small farmers in the west. Significant #s of real estate companies paid people to sign up for these plots of land, then land was turned over to real estate companies and not made into farm land. Farming in the west developed into two individual lines: family farms (little house on the prairie) Headed by men, most married, some not (in which case they put an add in the paper for a wife) Development of corporate farms (bonanza: bonanza farms. People that worked the farms weren"t owners, but agricultural laborers. Claimed american experience on the frontier was what made.
