Power: the ability to get someone else to do what you want them to do whether they want to or not. 3 sources of power: use of force, control over resources, tangible/intangible, special knowledge/skills, status, give resources in exchange for belongings, control over people, president, this brings up idea of authority. Authority: legitimation of power or the right to exercise power over someone; person in authority has a legitimate right to tell us what to do. Traditional authority: long standing way of doing things: monarchy, always open to challenge. Expert authority: based on specialized knowledge that most people don"t have. Rational legal authority: based on formal, legal documents: rules and limits, presents checks on the power. Exchange theory: we will weigh the benefits and costs of a situation before following through with it. People w/ many resources use this to gain power.
