GEOL 1001 Chapter : Chp 9 Crustal Deformation
Document Summary
Related to joints, faults, folds, and foliation. Displacement: rock moves from one place to another (changes location) happens during faulting o 2. Rotation: rotating of a rock, happens during faulting and other things o 3. Changing shape: strain through squeezing the rock, stretching the rock, sheer strain through sheering the rock. Where do we get these types? o brittle deformation: rigid, cold rock that can break or fracture. Expect earthquakes and faults in this layer o ductile deformation: change shape without breaking the rock. Expect strain, folding, foliation in this layer. All the different types of strains are examples. Factors that control rock behavior: Temperature: hotter rocks are more ductile o because atoms can repair broken bonds very quickly. Pressure: higher pressures lead to more ductile behavior o because squishing is so hard that pieces cannot separate. Composition: some minerals behave differently than others o based on chemical configuration.
