Document Summary

All of the richest greek cities were not in greece- they were along the ionian coast (turkey) It had a prosperous agricultural area, but it was primarily manufacturing and trade- full of pottery and metal work. Athens was dominated by an odd combination of political trends. They were independent city states (there were three hundred colonies) occasionally the colonies themselves would send people out as an independent city state. Athens developed an empire- it didn"t send out many colonies, but it turned the delian league into an empire. Athenian expansion differed from expansion of other greek cities. Everywhere else was a monarchy or an oligarchy. Art, literature, philosophy (athens is the cultural center of greece), mathematics, architecture, etc. Other city states weren t centers of philosophy or cultural centers at all. The role athens played in the fifty years of the peloponesian war. Athens engages in more or less permanent war.
