GEOG 2050 Chapter : Geog Ch4
Document Summary
9-19-11: transmission, scattering, diffusion, refraction, rayleigh scattering. Input to earth: solar radiation to earth-insolation: energy essentials (figure 4. 1, energy pathways, short wave energy from sun to earth, long wave energy from earth to sun, transmission, passage of energy through atmosphere or water. --wavelength on energy depends on temperature of object: insolation at earth"s surface (figure 4. 2) Insolation input- all radiation received at earth"s surface- direct and indirect: blue: cold, less energy. Orange: hot, more energy: maximum values: north africa and middle east (dessert)---occurring outside insolation region in subtropics. ~35: low albedo, less reflection, more absorption, more heat produced, ex: dark surfaces: soil- 10-35%, black top- 5-10%, water (zenith-overhead), tropical forest. -july and january albedo:nh summer-less snow tropics(~19-38%) absorb more energy. In water, sun"s ray can penetrate up to 120 feet: on land, insolation affects only top few inches of soil, upper 30 feet of the ocean contains 4x the energy of the entire atmosphere.
