Document Summary

Today"s topics: unit 11 : atmospheric moisture & the water balance. Announcements: bonus opportunity - cookies & controversy - 10pts - 2nd floor south hall library 6pm. Review notes and complete side by side review with textbook. During the lecture, take notes here: unique properties of water, hydrogen bonding - different opposing polarity; water sticks to itself. Surface tension - idea that if you dump water on the ground, it"s all together as one unit--not individual particles *meniscus. Capillarity - water"s desire to stick to other stuff; water being thrown on the table and you throw paper towels on it and it"s absorbed in the paper towel: phase changes of water (it"s all latent heat!!!) Ice - molecules are bound to one another by strong intermolecular attraction. These bonds can be weakened by heat energy. When heat is applied, ice loses its orderly patter.
