Cotton fields are down the pamires in central asia (women and children work cotton fields) the people don"t own the cotton crops, the government does. Cotton is due to soviet"s demand for quotas and quantity. important culturally also (soccer mascot is cotton pickers) As you move down river, away from mountain and towards desert has salinization. Aral sea (was fifth largest inland body of water) was major fishing area (has two extinct fish in containment). Amduaria delta goes up to the aral sea. Soviet union in 1950/60 wanted more cotton so they poured all that water over land (desert land) which causes salinization. Village of muynaq used to be a fishing port along the aral sea. The beach at the village is all dried up, no water at all looks like desert.
