Three types of physical geography: mountainous parts, deserts (west, steppe (prairie) the pamir mountains (central) are the orographic center of asia. This region is heavily tectonic with many earthquakes. It is continental (no body of water): very hot summers and very cold winters. Is thinly populated, most live in river valleys. The steppes, mountains, and deserts are lightly populated. Remained zoroastrian until ad713 which is when arab armies under leadership of qutayba bin muslim conquered area and went after river valleys. Biggest trade route was the silk route which dominated trade for couple thousand years. The route brought silks from china and japan to the middle east and europe. Brought paper as well (first used in china) and fireworks and gunpowder.
