East germany was the german democratic republic (gdr in english or ddr in german) soviet union"s. East germany controlled by soviet union and based on communist principles. Division of east and west because the 4 powers could not agree. Berlin was also divided even though it totally lay in the east. Conditions were not equal between east and west. East germany didn"t want to lose citizens to the west so they closed the borders and built a wall through berlin. The walls divided friends and families and the east lived in isolation.
