This first chapter is one of the most important of the book, because it introduces the themes and concepts that the authors use throughout the text and lays the foundation for understanding the remaining chapters. The themes and concepts developed in this chapter are used in each succeeding chapter as a framework for learning about the regions of the world. In addition to helping the student to assimilate and understand the material for each region, this framework will also pave the way for the student to compare and contrast regions throughout the remainder of the text. It is critical that the student thoroughly understands the material presented in this chapter. This chapter introduces and explains a number of foundation concepts, including the concept of geography itself. This chapter also introduces the fundamental concepts of diversity and globalization, and explains the dynamic tension between them.
