Cultural landscapes = visible material expression of human settlement (past and present: how people interact, how they bring people together or push them apart. 5 motivations for learning about other cultures: Economic and political colonialism = the gaining of power from others. Religious missionary activity = bring beliefs to others. Fantasy = wanting to learn because of stories (lost city of atlantis, paradise , fountain of youth) Regions = the way the world is divided, based on the physical and human features, and the interaction between the two. Their boundaries shift and countries change: they may cut across ethnic culture or national lines, they may divide or clump ethnic groups together. Culture = everything we use that isn"t biologically inherited. Binds people together into a way of life. Dynamic = changes and adapts at different rates and times.
