FREN 1002 Chapter : L Imparfait Suite 1
Document Summary
Deviance: violation of a social norm that elicits a negative reaction. Norm: rules that govern our public behavior; expectations about how we should behave. Sometimes norms tell us what we should do, sometimes they tell us what we shouldn"t do. Norms are relative, which means deviance is relative as well. Norms and deviance vary over time and from group to group; as norms change, so do our ideas about deviance. Different kinds of norms: folkways: a type of norm that governs less serious behavior; might even think of these as etiquette (generally wont be arrested or ostracized for violating these types of norms) ex. Expectation in the elevator is for people to take their own personal space and not talk, when violated we feel uncomfortable. Why are they standing next to me: mores: norms that we hold more seriously, if violated we believe there is something wrong with the person, and can be moral issues.
