However, i have decided to write this document so that there is complete clarity at how things go in my class. Absences and grading: if you want a decent grade in this class you must attend all classes. The overwhelming majority of students i have failed in the past were students who were regularly absent. 10% is quizzes and 15% is in-class essays, both of which you cannot makeup unless you have official documentation of an excused absence. Instead of relying heavily on volunteers, i simply call on students so that everyone is participating every day: participation is a qualitative grade, not a percentage. In my class, if you show up all four class days, you get a solid mid-a (95) for that week"s participation. If you miss one class, you get a c- (70) for that week.
