Document Summary
Grammar is the system of rules and elements of phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax and. Our mental grammar allows us to judge the correctness of structures, including sentences. Syntax is how words are arranged within a sentence ( syntax is of greek origin meaning a putting together or arrangement ) Syntax involves five main concepts: word order, phrase structure, constituency, parts of speech, and agreement. A phrase is one or more words that functions as a unit in a sentence. Phrase structure rules describe how phrases can be constructed, and how they may come together to create well-formed sentences. We have a finite set of rules that can generate an infinite number of well-formed structures. This generative grammar shows that phrases can be generated, not just described. A prepositional phrase is prep + noun phrase. Example of a prepositional phrase: on the kitchen table, behind the bookshelf.
