Invisible meaning: how we recognize what is meant even when it isn"t actually said or written, example: sarcasm. Shared assumptions and expectations between speaker and listener are important. The other words used in phrases or sentences that help determine the meaning of the word. The time & place in which we encounter messages influences our interpretation of those messages. Situational context: the context of the situation, facial expressions help to interpret the intent of the communication. Words that cannot be interpreted at all unless the physical context of the speaker is known. Deictic expressions: words that point out some aspect of the speaker"s physical context. Time deixis: now, then, last month. An act by which a speaker or writer uses language to enable a listener or reader to identify something.
