Document Summary

Human beings first populated most of the globe during the pleistocene epoch, which started some 1. 8 million years ago. This epoch is sometimes called the age of humanity. The major climate and environmental changes that took place during the pleistocene were the backdrop for some of the most important stages in human evolution. See chapter 2, "the great ice age" section. Most tree-living placental mammals belong to the order primate, the same to which we belong. There are two suborders: anthropoids (apes, humans, and monkeys) and prosimians (lemurs, tarsiers, and other "premonkeys"). Compared to chimpanzees h. habilis ate less meat. About 2 mya the archaeological record shows that compared to chimpanzees h. habilis ate a diet with less high fiber diet components. See chapter 2 "the earliest human mind" section. The "molecular clock" shows that humans and orangutans are more closely related than humans and chimpanzees.
