Document Summary

Inheritance in biological evolution occurs when some of the variation in the trait of interest arises from genetic variation. The gene of interest is the melanocortin-1 receptor which depending on the environment and interaction with other genes switches back and forth between producing dark pigment (eumelanin) or light pigment (phaemelanin). There is a single mutation in the mc1r gene in many of the beach populations where oldfield mice have light coat color. Natural selection favors a match between coat color and environmental background. Mice have a fitness advantage if their coat color matches that of their environment. A sarguaro cactus has a waxy coating on its surface, a shallow root system, and a low surface area-to-volume ratio to adapt to its abiotic environment. They help it gather and retain water and survive in the high temperatures and low humidity to which it is exposed.
