Title: the effect of cystic fibrosis on the fitness of a population. Cystic fibrosis is a recessive autosomal disease in which a person inherits two copies of the defective cf gene. In order to inherit the gene, one copy must be given from each parent. 1 in 4 people will have cystic fibrosis, while every 1 in 2 persons will carry the mutated gene but will not have the disease. The other 25% of people do not carry the gene at all. Fibrosis causes persistent lung infection, which lessens one"s ability to breathe over time. A buildup of mucus clogs a person"s airway up which then leads to bacterial infection. Eventually, this leads to lung failure (cystic fibrosis foundation). Having cystic fibrosis, a person"s lungs begin to decline early in childhood.
