BIOL 1202 Chapter : Chapter 42
Document Summary
Concept 42. 1: circulatory systems link exchange surfaces with cells throughout the body. Transport systems functionally connect the organs of exchange with the body cells. Simple animals like cnidarians have a body wall only 2 cell-layers thick between extermal enviornemtn and gastrovascular cavity. Gastrovascular cavity functions both in digestion and circulation. More complex animals have two types of circulatory systems. Open circulatory system: blood bathes the organs directly. Hemolymph: the circulatory fluid which is also the interstitial fluid. Closed circulatory system: blood is confined to vessels and is distinct from the interstitial fluid. Both of these types of systems have 3 basic components: A muscular pump (the heart): powers circulation by using metabolic energy to elevate the hydrostatic pressure of the circulatory fluid, which then flows through a circuit of vessels and back to the heart. Cardiovascular system: the closed circulatory systems in humans and vertebrates. Types of blood vessels: arteries, veins, and capillaries.
