Document Summary

Concept 38. 1: flowers, double fertilization, and fruits are unique features of the angiosperm life cycle. In general terms, explain how the basic plant life cycle with alternation of generations is modified in angiosperms: sporophyte stage is dominant. It is larger and more conspicuous and longer-lived than the gametophyte: three f"s, flowers, double fertilization, fruit. At the top of the style there is stigma that serves landing platform for pollen. Within the ovary there are ovules: distinguish between, complete and incomplete flowers, complete contain all four basic floral organs. Within each microsporangia, there are many diploid microsporocytes. Each microsporocyte undergoes meiosis, forming four haploid microspores, each of which gives rise to a haploid male gametophyte. Each microspore undergoes mitosis, producing male gametophyte consisting of two cells: generative cell and tube cell. Together there two cells and spore wall constitute pollen grain. During maturation of male gametophyte, generative cell passes into tube cell and the spore wall is completed.
