BIOL 1202 Chapter : BIOL 1202 Chapter 30 Notes
Document Summary
Plant diversity ii: the evolution of seed plants. The seed plants come in two separate groupings: gymnosperms, angiosperms. Initially the gymnosperms are very high in the number of species, but then the angiosperms took over and the number of gymnosperms decreased drastically. When the angiosperms came along the gymnosperms already did all the heavy lifting and the angiosperms then just take over the territory. This means that the angiosperms won and the gymnosperms lost and as a result a great majority became extinct. The next groups of land plants to evolve were the seeds plants. The new characteristics that showed up with this group are: No longer require water for reproduction (this is a huge advantage; this is what allowed for them to move into a vast majority of new territories; this allows sperm to travel in much greater distances)
