Document Summary

This is an example of an emergent property. Because of these polar covalent bonds water is a polar molecule. >>>>>some of the most biologically important polar covalent bonds are the bonds in water molecules. Water is shaped like a wide v (is bent has a positive and negative side. Oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen, so the electrons of the covalent bonds spend more time closer to oxygen than to hydrogen (these are polar covalent bonds). Polar molecule: its overall charge is unevenly distributed. The partially positive charged hydrogen is attracted to the partially negatively charged oxygen and are held together by a hydrogen bond. When water is in liquid form its hydrogen bonds are fragile; each about 1/20 as strong as a covalent bond. Hydrogen bonds break and reform quickly (don"t last long), so molecules are constantly forming new hydrogen bonds with a succession of partners.
