Two or more different elements combined in a fixed ratio. Characteristics are completely unrelated to those of the elements included. Stay in vicinity of nucleus because opposite charges attract. Only subatomic particles that are directly involved in chemical reactions. Mass of proton and neutron approximately 1 dalton.
