Document Summary

Insect walking on water: water transported in plants, due to hydrogen bonding. Lipids: functional groups, hydroxyl- alcohols, carbonyl- aldehydes (terminal carbon) and ketones, carboxyl- acid groups, amino- amines, sulfhydryl- thiols, phosphate- organic phosphates, polar, methyl- ch3, not polar. Large molecules made up of smaller molecules: polymers are constructed from monomers, polymers: many units, monomers: single unit, synthesis of polymers, covalent bond formation between monomer units. Condensation (dehydration) synthesis: one product is giving up a water molecule as you form a covalent bond. Carbon skeleton: backbone, covalently linked carbon molecules, figure 4. 5, each carbon has to have 4 covalent bonds 3. Flexible system: array of complex molecules from a few simpler molecules. Fewer enzymes involved to make biological molecules than if starting from scratch : carbohydrates, general formula (ch2o)n, ex: n=6, c6h12o6, figure 5. 5, glucose, fructose, and sucrose. Interact with one another or are on the surface to interact with water: stabilizing tertiary structure, weak, hydrogen bonds.
