Document Summary

When individuals share similar genes (e. g. , offspring, siblings, etc. ) they often resemble each other. (see fig 13. 1) While offspring resemble their parents/siblings there are still some differences. Some of these similarities and differences are studied using genetics. Reproduction is an emergent property associated with life. The reproduction of an organism is a consequence of heredity. Continuity of biological traits from one generation to the next. Inherited differences among individuals of the same species. >>>>>>offspring acquire genes from parents by inheriting chromosomes. Units of hereditary information made up of dna and are located on chromosomes. Involves only one parent and produces genetically identical offspring. Each chromosome contains hundreds or thousands of genes. Each gene is in a specific region or locus (see 14. 4) Precise position of a gene on a specific chromosome. Involves two parents and gives rise to the offspring with unique combinations of the genes inherited from the two parents.
