Document Summary

Goal of science is to make good models. What are the characteristics of life: organization, energy use, development, reproduction, evolve, respond to the environment. What determines solubility: like dissolves like, like in terms of polarity. Atom - the smallest unit of matter separable by normal chemical means; the smallest unit of matter that retains all of the properties of that element. Protons and neutrons are located in the nucleus of an atom, with the electrons orbiting the nucleus. Atomic number - the number of protons in an atom. Atomic mass - the number of protons and neutrons in an atom (approximately) Isotopes - variants of an atom, having different atomic mass (neutrons), same atomic number. Valence - the number of electrons that need to be gained or lost to ll the outer shell of electrons; ll in the shells from the inside --> out. Valence also predicts the number of bonds that an atom will form.
